I spent a bunch of time looking at this last night/this morning. As for the
"letter", it's a hoax
http://saywhen.wordpress.com/2007/08/27/letter-from-mckinney-sheehan-tarpley
-and-kaminsky-warning-of-a-cheney-backed-new-911/#comment-1126
But I spent the most amount of time looking at the "$1billion 'bet' that
the stock market is going to crash". There is a options trader webforum
that discussed the reasons why an investor would be doing what happened,
and they had all sort of explanations. The one I like the best is at
http://www.tickerforum.org/cgi-ticker/akcs-www?post=4669&page=18
(search for "begin quote from another board", there's no direct link to
that comment) I had to read stuff on that forum for a couple hours in order
to understand all the jargon and acronyms they are using. Here is my
translation:
The investor did "bet that the stock market is going to go down" but they
also heged that bet with an equal one saying it would go up. Those two
effectively cancel each other out and the investor is essentially taking
out a $6billion loan from the stock market that needs to be repaid in by
September 21. This loan is costing them a lot in commisions fees, but it
may be the only way they can get money or it has some other advantage (like
not causing the market to pain by selling off a lot of stock or something).
So the immediate conclusion that someone is betting on a stock market crash
isn't quite right. But still if someone needs a $6billion short term loan
and is doing this sort of trick, they probably need the money pretty badly.
In the process of looking at all this stuff I found all sorts of crazy
conspiracy stuff, some pretty believable and some pretty tin-foil-hat. I'm
sure there is some truth in there, but it's hard to sort out from the rest
of the junk. :(
